A guide to National Heritage Week in Meath
All the events from 12th to 20th August
National Heritage Week 2023 takes place nationwide from Saturday 12th to Sunday 20th August. A colourful range of events and projects celebrating all aspects of our heritage will take place across the country as communities, families, holiday makers and people of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to get out and explore their heritage.
Galleries, gardens, historic houses, barnyards and studios will play host to events covering everything from architecture to archaeology, film to foraging, philosophy to genealogy and music to storytelling. Walks, talks and workshops will satisfy the heritage curious among us who can search for events taking place in their area either by county or by topic from here.
The theme for National Heritage Week this year is ‘Living Heritage’ which is defined as the practices, knowledge and skills that have been passed from one generation to the next, and are still in use today. As such, many events and projects will focus on the keeping alive of these crafts and skills, and this year’s launch took place at the workshop of Tom McDonnell and James Collins (pictured above), two of the last remaining men practicing the dying trade of Traveller tinsmithing.
Minister Noonan TD said: “With thousands of free events all over the country, Heritage Week is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the places, traditions, crafts and skills that have woven their way through the fabric of Irish society. I’d like to commend the hundreds of people, community groups and organisations across Ireland who, every year, give freely of their own time to host events and share their interest in heritage with the public and with the next generation of heritage lovers and tradition keepers. It is thanks to their efforts that the understanding and love of our heritage is kept alive, and passed on to the next generation.”
CEO of the Heritage Council, Virginia Teehan said: “Whether we are conscious of it or not, we are all torch holders of our heritage in one way or another and this year’s theme of Living Heritage provides an opportunity to explore this idea further. Anybody who has learned a skill from a family member, who has repeated a story told to them by an ancestor, or even anybody who has played GAA, has played a part in preserving our cultural heritage. Many of the events registered this year will highlight how valuable these traditions are and how richly they contribute to our understanding of who we are as a people.”
The National Lottery and Fáilte Ireland are joined by the Office of Public Works (OPW), the Irish Landmark Trust, and the Local Authority Water Programme as partners of National Heritage Week 2023. At county level, National Heritage Week is co-ordinated and supported by local authority heritage officers, their colleagues and with numerous local heritage groups and organisations.
Coordinated by the Heritage Council since 2005, National Heritage Week has become one of Ireland’s largest cultural events, celebrating Ireland's built, natural and cultural heritage and aiming to generate awareness, appreciation and preservation of our wonderful resources.
The events in Meath
Colmcille – Connecting Ancient and Modern
The ancient site of Kells Monastery, granted to Colmcille by High King Diarmaid Mc Carroll in the mid sixth century and once a powerhouse of art and learning, still overlooks the town drawing visitors from around the globe. Through the vision and teaching of St Colmcille/Columba, Irish monks and scribes were to become the greatest scribes and painters of books in the world. This year connecting modern art form with the ancient we begin by taking a guided walking tour of Kells Type Trail which brings together a collection of modern art installations highlighting Kells unique heritage of lettering as an art form. Each installation is an artistic interpretation of the word ‘CONNECT’.
As we move through Kells ancient streetscape, we will experience a deeper and meaningful understanding as we discover the artist’s inspiration behind each colourful piece. Reaching the end of our tour at St Colmcille/Columba’s House we will view Colmcille the Scribe one of the award winning Colmcille Illuminations. Come along to see how the Irish style of writing developed in Ireland from Colmcille/Columba’s time as we compare the Cathach, a sixth century manuscript thought to have been written by St Colmcille/Columba to later manuscripts such as the Book of Kells completed by Columban monks in the ninth century. Entry into the ancient oratory lit by candlelight for the occasion is included.

Tours of Moyglare Manor, Kildare/Meath - in association with Historic Houses of Ireland
Moyglare Manor is a magnificent mid-18th century country house, situated on the borders of Counties Meath and Kildare, 2km from Maynooth. The property has undergone extensive renovations to return it to its former splendour. Moyglare provides visitors with a taste of the many respective periods through which the house was remodelled, from 1764 to the Irish Regency Period. Tours are given by Dr Angela Alexander, the leading academic on Dublin cabinet makers from the Irish Regency period.

An Exhibition of 'Heritage Wear' at Oldcastle Library
During Heritage Week the Kreative Sewing Group invite you to visit their exhibition celebrating Irish and vintage fashion. from vintage to present day wear the exhibition will show fashion and accessories, designed and or made in Ireland Some vintage items will date back as far as 1920. Slane Castle Hermitage Opens to Public
Discover the hidden gem of Slane Castle Estate, St Erc’s Hermitage. Join our special guided tours during Heritage Week on August 12th and 13th and learn about the fascinating history of this ancient site and its connection to St.Patrick. Originally a wooden structure from the fifth century, St Erc’s Hermitage evolved over time with various hermits residing and rebuilding it. Today, the stone ruins, dating back to the fifteenth century, include a nave, chancel, and tower.
Thanks to the Community Monuments Fund’s support, the Hermitage underwent extensive conservation efforts, including archaeological recording and repairs. St Erc, once a pagan druid, became a bishop ordained by St Patrick. He was renowned for his wise and just judgments and is thought to have earned praise even from St Patrick himself. St Erc’s feast day is on November 2nd, the date of his death in 514, at the remarkable age of 90, and he is believed to be buried on the Hill of Slane, where he established a monastery.
Join us for guided tours at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm on August 12th and 13th. Each tour lasts approximately 75 minutes however be prepared for rough and muddy terrain by wearing suitable walking shoes and a rain jacket. Regrettably, due to the terrain, we cannot accommodate guests with mobility issues. Don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in the history of St. Erc’s Hermitage and its significance in Slane’s past.

100 Years of Living Heritage Through Sport
St Ultan's Historical Society is displaying 100 years of living heritage through sport in Bohermeen, Boyerstown, Cortown and surrounding districts. Sport has always been a unique bond in most communities throughout Ireland, in both difficult social, economic, and political times over the past century and our community like many more has their own story to tell. Also covered is the changing face of sporting times, from being a male dominated outlet to today when the women of Ireland and our community have now matched their male counterparts in being active in most sports. Our display through photo and more is also aimed at getting people out post covid of a certain generation, to mix, mingle and chat about past sporting times, as both participants and observers. Our display is also hoped to cause great interest locally to both those whose families have lived locally for many generations and to those who have made their home in our community in recent times to be aware of its heritage and sporting passions over the past century. Our project is supported by Creative Ireland Programme through Meath County Council Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2023.

Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway - Nobber Loop (Sli na hOibre)
Sli na hOibre or the Nobber way - is a 3.4km walking loop around the village of Nobber. Its is part of the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway which is a 30km walkway from Navan in County Meath to Dun na Ri park forest park in Kingscourt Co Cavan. The greenway runs along the old railway line which ran from Dublin to Kingscourt . The line opened in 1872 and passenger service finished in 1947 and goods services in 1963. Later on the line was used to transport gypsum from the mine in Kingscourt to the platin cement factory in Drogheda. This stopped in 2001 and the line was no longer used until recently when it was opened as the Boynevalley to Lakelands Greenway - its near completion with works ongoing July 2023. Our project involved researching the Nobber section of the line and providing three information boards along the Nobber loop. We also located sections of the original rails from the 1880s along with the original iron track changing lever - it is hoped to get these conserved and put on this display near the station platform in the near future. Heritage week 2023 - we propose to put some of our findings up on the Nobber Times facebook page - it will include photos of some of the original railway iron gates, levers , rails , maps and copy of 1880s train timetable. Babe's Bridge Restoration Project
Babe’s Bridge is the remains of a 13th century bridge over the River Boyne near Navan. The southeast span still stands along with remains of some of the abutments in the river. It is one of the oldest bridge arches in Ireland. The talk will cover the history of the bridge and the current restoration project which is being managed by https://www.7larchitects.ie. The stonework will be repointed with traditional lime mortar, with missing stonework replaced by fallen stonework recovered from the river underneath the bridge. Bat roosts will be maintained. Studies into the archaeology, underwater archaeology, and ecology of the site were done as part of the project, along with 3D imaging surveys to records the current condition of the bridge and to help detail the restoration works. An Taisce thanks The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and Meath County Council for Communities Monuments Fund funding in 2021 that allowed An Taisce to commission studies on the conservation of the bridge. 2023 funding has been granted to carry out conservation works on the stonework in Autumn 2023. Public Transport is available to Navan town centre which is a 4km walk along the towpath.

National Print Museum Pop-Up Print Shop
The National Print Museum, in collaboration with Meath County Council and Creative Ireland, ably assisted by Skills Transfer volunteers will host a pop-up print shop in Kells Courthouse Tourism and Cultural Hub. Sample a day in the life of an apprentice printer. Make your printers’ hat, set some type, and pull a print! Then design your own letter and print it using the modular type system, the P22 Blox. Suitable for all ages. This is a drop-in event and no booking is necessary. In 2019 Letterpress Printing in Ireland was inscribed on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of ireland.

KIERAN Slyne is an award winning documentary cameraman and photographer who now lives in Kells. He has been fortunate to travel the high roads and bye roads of this country, as well as the world. He got his first camera at the age of 13 and since then has found inspiration wherever he is. His photographic work has been reproduced in many publications. GEOLOGICAL HERITAGE OF COUNTY MEATH EXHIBITION
THE geology of Meath includes all its bedrock, subsoils and soils. Often summarised only as ‘the plains of Royal Meath’, it is in fact a landscape with an intricate and spectacular history, containing a multitude of geological features and sites that owe their origins to complex, dynamic and fascinating processes. This variation influences the county’s land-use patterns, farming tradition, habitats and biodiversity. We interact with our natural landscape on a daily basis and by understanding its formation we can learn more about our origins, our surrounding environment, and our sense of place. This exhibition has been complied by Dr Robbie Meehan, geologist and author of the The Making of Meath: The County’s Natural Landscape History.

THE ASHBOURNE STORY EXHIBITION
MEATH Arts Office and the Toradh Gallery present The Ashbourne Story in partnership with the Ashbourne Historical Society (AHS). The AHS have put a considerable amount of work into compiling this exhibition which was due to be presented as part of the Ashbourne 2020 celebrations. Ashbourne 2020 celebrated the signing of the lease in 1820 for the land on which Frederick Bourne would build a small village with several coaching inns, a small hotel, a toll house and other buildings. He called the village Ashbourne. Theexhibition runs from 15th August 2023 – 8th January 2024

HISTORY AND HERITAGE DISPLAYED IN THREAD -
DUNSHAUGHLIN MUNICIPAL AREA
HISTORY and Heritage Displayed in Thread. We are holding an embroidery exhibition depicting some heirlooms, emblems and the historical structures of the Dunshaughlin Municipal area which includes Ratoath and Dunboyne. We are a new group of experienced and novice sewers who are displaying our craft and we invite you to enjoy and view this part of Meath ‘painted in thread’ . Our group is excited by the resurging interest in embroidery and we take our inspiration from the ancient environment around us. SOUND and Music Workshop: Music has long been associated with Irish Heritage and Culture. In this workshop children will investigate the origin of sound and sound waves, how these are eventually interpreted as sound by the brain.

DULEEK HOUSE & DULEEK HERITAGE-LED REGENERATION PLAN
TOM McGimsey, Grade 1 Conservation Architect from MESH Architects, gives a talk on his research and work on Duleek House and its links with Duleek Village. Hear about the history of Duleek House, a 17th century Country House located at the edge of Duleek village. On the lands of Duleek House are the remains of the Augustinian House of St Michael of Duleek, a medieval grange or farm formerly a possession of Llanthony Priory. Prior to Tom’s talk the conservation team from Sheridan Woods Architects, will give background and an overview of the Duleek Heritage-Led Regeneration Plan funded by the Heritage Council Historic Town Initiative 2023 and how it will lead to enhancing the heritage, streetscape and public realm in Duleek Village.

PADDLE TO THE DEVENISH LANDS AT DOWTH WITHIN THE UNESCO WORLD
HERITAGE SITE
PADDLE your way, in one of Boyne Boats handcrafted traditional Irish currachs, to the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Step off your boat onto the Devenish Lands at Dowth – a farm which is a celebration of perhaps the most important part of Ireland’s living heritage: the food production knowledge and skills that have been passed down through generations since the introduction of farming to Ireland by the Neolithic people who came here 6,000 years ago. The ability of farmers to create plentiful food in the fertile soil of the Boyne Valley has been a key enabling factor in the scale and abundance of monuments and settlements in this valley since that time. This farm alone retains the monuments and evidence of seven distinct historical periods. The Devenish Lands at Dowth is also very special farm with respect to continuing to pass on food production knowledge and skills to future generations through its work developing sustainable agriculture solutions and promoting human health through nutrition.
On the farm, you will walk through the woods and maybe glimpse a herd of wild deer. You will hear about the sustainable agriculture and biodiversity research on the farm. You will enjoy an artisan-produced picnic in a 4,500 year old Neolithic henge. Finally you will visit the newly rediscovered 5,500 year old passage tomb buried beneath the 250 year old Georgian manor house, Dowth Hall. Return home by boat marvelling at the rich biodiversity, history and beauty along the Boyne.
The outdoor tour will take most of the day from 10am to about 4pm. It starts and finishes at Boyne Boats at the sealock on the canal. A medium fitness level is required.

A short history of Dry Stone Walling in Ireland. The heritage and Biodiversity value of dry stone walls, and a demonstration of the final stages of completing the Dry Stone Retaining Wall Project at Kilskyre, Kells, Co Meath. This was a collaborative project and included a very strong contribution from a Master Builder from the Dry Stone Wall Association of Ireland together with members of the Pride of Place group and Gardeners Dynamic.

WAR AND CIVIL WAR IN KILMESSAN AND HINTERLANDS
THE Heritage Week talk in Horace Plunkett Hall, Dunsany, is resuming this year, the first one since the pandemic shutdowns. Guest speaker is Jim O’Leary of Kilmessan, author of ‘The Robinstown Affair – A War of Independence Story’.
As we come to the end of the Decade of Commemorations, Jim O’Leary’s talk will address events in Meath one hundred years ago with special reference to the villages of Dunsany and Kilmessan and the neighbouring areas. In particular, his talk will explore how the War of Independence and the subsequent Civil War affected life in the district. Other themes will include electoral politics – there were no fewer than three general elections in the 1921-23 period – land agitation, and what the 1922 Census reveals about the make-up of the local population.

FULLY RESTORED SEVENARCH, PACK HORSE BRIDGE
IN 2008 Scurlogstown Olympiad commenced a study of an old stone bridge. Initally believed to date from late 17th or early 19th century, the recording of a major bridge at Laracor in Downs Survey in late 17th, would suggest the 40” passageway predated the Laracor structure. It was in regular use by school children prior to the introduction of bus transport with free education in 1960s, and was fortunate to avoid destruction at the time of the Boyne Drainage. Most importantly two land owners Toss Harrington and Pat Conlon have facilated and encourage the extensive restoration. Donough Cahill, Executive Director, Irish Georgian Society (IGS), will deliver an address.

Meath Barn Owl Survey 2023
Dr Alan McCarthy, Birdwatch Ireland will present a talk on one of Ireland’s most iconic and magical birds, the Barn Owl. The findings of the Meath Barn Owl Survey will also be presented.
This project was funded the by the Heritage Council and Meath County Council as an action of the County Meath Heritage Plan.

Join Mark Smith, Creative Director, Kells Type Trail on a walk of Typography of the Everyday, something that we can often over look, we’ll also be including legacy pieces from the back catalog of Type Trails now in its 14th year… Come along and find out a little more about the Heritage of Typography on our streets.
