Jameson Rolls Out First Single Pot Still Whiskey In Decades
Jameson, the world’s bestselling Irish whiskey, has launched Jameson Single Pot Still, billed as a throwback to an era when Irish whiskey reigned supreme.
Throughout the 19th century, the Bow Street Distillery in Dublin was famed worldwide for its single pot still whiskey. However, in the late 20th century Irish Distillers decided to switch to a blended whiskey to make it more attractive to modern drinkers.
Single pot still is a style of whiskey made up of a mash bill of malted and unmalted barley which is then triple distilled in copper pot stills within a single distillery.
Master distiller Kevin O’Gorman said the Single Pot Still has been matured ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. He describes the result as “a complex, spicy, and smooth symphony of flavours and aromas”.
O’Gorman added: “It has been an honour and a joy to work on rebuilding a traditional Jameson expression with an innovative twist and bringing a new member into the Jameson family.
“While crafting this whiskey, the team at Midleton Distillery wanted to showcase the quintessential notes of the single pot still style by blending the familiar ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks before bringing a new dimension with the introduction of the virgin oak casks.”
Blender Deirdre O’Carroll explained: “Through some trial and error, and working with different prototypes and flavour combinations, we found the right balance. We have created a whiskey that is robust and spicy by single pot still’s nature, but also intriguingly complex and bearing the trademark Jameson smoothness. We couldn’t be prouder of the results.”
Bottled at 46% ABV, compared with 40% ABV for regular Jameson, the Single Pot Still is priced at c.€60 per 700ml bottle and is available in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Dublin Airport, the UK, Brand Homes and Jameson online.
